How to Change Your Internal (Built-In) Domain in Squarespace

If you’ve ever noticed a strange-looking URL tied to your Squarespace site (something like your-site-name.squarespace.com), that’s your built-in domain, also called your Site ID. Most site owners never need to touch this. But in some cases, changing it can be useful, especially during early setup, rebrands, or cleanup work before launch.

Below is a quick explanation of what it is, why you might change it, and how to do it safely.

TL;DR

You can change your Squarespace Site ID by going to Settings → Domains & Email → Domains, clicking your built-in domain, editing the Site ID, and saving. Do this early, and only if you know why you need it.

What Is the Squarespace Built-In Domain?

Every Squarespace site automatically gets a built-in domain when it’s created. This is mainly used:

  • Internally by Squarespace

  • For system links, previews, and some integrations

  • As a fallback if no custom domain is connected

It’s not meant to be your public-facing URL, but it can still show up behind the scenes or in edge cases.

Why You Might Want to Change It

Changing your internal domain can make sense if:

  • You’re rebranding and want cleaner internal references

  • You duplicated a site and want to avoid confusing IDs

  • You’re doing early-stage setup before SEO or integrations

  • You want internal consistency for testing or staging

  • You want to make sure your site is branded from top to bottom

How to Change Your Internal Domain (Site ID)

  1. Open your Squarespace website

  2. Click Settings (gear icon)

  3. Go to Domains & Email

  4. Click Domains

  5. Find Built-In Domains and select your built-in domain

  6. Under Site ID, edit the value

  7. Click Save

That’s it. The change is instant.

Jay Van Dyke - Top Rated Squarespace Web Designer in New Jersey

Hi, I’m Jay. I’m a freelance web developer who specializes in Squarespace, and I’ve been building and customizing Squarespace sites for over 9 years.

A lot of my experience comes from working inside the real constraints of the platform, not just designing pages but dealing with how sites actually behave once they’re live. That means things like layout limitations, styling edge cases, performance quirks, and the moments where Squarespace is great until it suddenly isn’t.

Most of what I write here comes directly from real projects, real questions, and real problems I see people run into with Squarespace every day.
